A printer that won't connect to Wi-Fi is one of the most common everyday tech frustrations, and it's usually one of a handful of causes. Work through these in order and most printers are back online within a few minutes.
1. Restart the Printer
It's the simplest fix, and it genuinely resolves a large share of connection issues. Turn the printer fully off, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it back on. This clears temporary faults in the printer's own Wi-Fi connection.
2. Check Your Wi-Fi Credentials
If you've recently changed your Wi-Fi password, or switched internet providers, your printer is likely still trying to connect using the old details. Most printers have a small screen or companion app where you can re-select your network and re-enter the current password.
3. Router Issues
If your Wi-Fi has been playing up generally, your printer will be affected too. Restarting the router, and checking the printer is within reasonable range of it, resolves this more often than people expect.
4. Driver Problems
An outdated or corrupted printer driver on your computer can prevent it from communicating properly with the printer, even when the printer itself is connected to Wi-Fi fine. Reinstalling the latest driver from the manufacturer's website usually resolves this.
5. Network Conflicts
If your printer and computer are connected to different networks, for example your computer on the 5GHz band and the printer only supporting 2.4GHz, they won't be able to find each other. Some smart printers also get confused when a home network has a guest network enabled alongside the main one.
6. When to Call a Technician
If you've restarted everything, confirmed the password, updated the driver, and it still won't connect, the issue may be a firmware fault, an incompatible network setup, or a printer nearing the end of its life. At that point, a proper diagnosis saves far more time than continuing to guess.
